Agriculture at Fort Hays State goes back to the time of Martin Allen, an area pioneer and homesteader who felt strongly there should be an institution of higher learning that taught modern farming methods. He urged the state legislature to petition the federal government to grant the land of the recently closed military fort to the state of Kansas for education and agriculture research. Agriculture was part of the Department of Biological Science until 1973 when it became a separate department.
The Department of Agriculture prepares students for careers in modern agriculture. The development of practical management skills, coupled with the teaching of current scientific methods, provides students with a desirable balance of application and theory. Degrees are offered in Agronomy, Animal Science, Beef Cattle Management, Educational Agriculture and General Agriculture. The department also manages the University Farm, a 3,800-acre operation that is self-sustaining and serves as a teaching laboratory.
