Biological Sciences at Fort Hays State University is well-known and respected for its field biology program. In recent years, the department has also increased its curriculum in molecular biology and microbiology.
Fort Hays State University’s Western Kansas Bioinformatics and Biotechnology Lab currently supports classroom and research activities for the department’s undergraduate and graduate students and faculty. Additional lab equipment serves the curriculum needs of field biology, molecular biology, and microbiology. This is crucial to meeting the teaching and research needs of a growing student body and the expanding demands of science education.
This year the department has added both a range management/soils faculty member and animal physiologist faculty member. Equipment needs for both of these programs exceed the start-up funding.
Department of Biological Sciences Needs
DNA Analysis Equipment.....................................................$42,840
This equipment will add to and upgrade the department’s ability to purify
and analyze RNA and DNA in the lab. It is also used to digitize DNA images
for more effective analysis.
Cell and Tissue Culture Equipment....................................$85,000
Culture equipment items include an ultra-low temperature cryogenic tissue
storage system and a laminar flow hood. The storage system is used as a growth
chamber for genetically engineered plants and the laminar flow hood is needed to
manipulate tissue under sterile conditions.
Mobile Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).................$130,000
A digital, high performance, compact microscope with low magnification
capabilities is needed to give students the opportunity to analyze a wide range of
materials. A mobile SEM with virtual network and wireless capabilities is
especially needed to allow for movement between classrooms and labs.
