The Department of Communication Disorders at Fort Hays State University is a strong undergraduate and graduate program that prepares students for careers in speech and language pathology. The university’s Geneva Herndon Speech and Hearing Clinic provides supervised clinical experience for students and serves western Kansas as a resource for speech and hearing evaluation and therapy.

Upgrade of Recording Equipment in the Herndon Clinic

The program has an excellent camera system, but software that will record each session needs to be updated. Ten rooms are currently wired to the system. In order to use digital video effectively the video recording system needs to allow for coding that will us to review and edit with more efficiency. Since many of these video clips are shared with educational teams and parents, during professional presentations, the video needs to be high-quality in order to assess closely.
Augmentive and Alternative Communication Devices and Assistive Listening Devices

This equipment allows a person, who cannot verbally communicate due to brain injury, cerebral palsy, stroke or other neurological disorder, to learn an alternative form of communication. Two to three different devices are giong to be needed to cover the variety of disorders measured. In addition, the program needs to purchase and update assistive listening devices that help individuals with hearing impairments.
Nasolaryngoscope and Zoom Lens Coupler

The addition of a Nasolaryngoscope to the voice and swallowing lab at the Herndon Clinic will give faculty and student clinicians a valuable tool for performing flexible fiber-optic evaluations of swallowing.
Phonatory Aerodynamic System (PAS)

The PAS allows students to work with clients who have issues with breathing and airflow. The PAS would be valuable in assessment, treatment and research of individuals who have these difficulties.
Ambulatory Phonation Monitor (APM)

The APM device provides a more natural use of voice and breathing for clients with airflow difficulties. Student clinicians will gain experience in the use of a technology found in clinical settings.
NET IEP Annual Licensing and Support

NET IEP is a web based software program used in public schools to write individualized education plans (IEP) for students with special needs. Student clinicians train on this software as part of their clinical experience.
SAMS Annual Licensing and Support
$700/year
SAMS is a web-based management program that faculty and students use to monitor students’ progress towards required learning outcomes. Faculty assess the students in the academic and clinical areas and use SAMS to manage these assessments. Students, also, use SAMS to monitor their own progress.
