The Department of Communcation Studies serves 130 majors at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Coursework is designed to improve oral message sending and relational communication skills, develop journalistic skills, and promote expertise in public relations and advertising.
Communication is a field with a wide range of job possibilities in industry, business, media, education and consulting.
Serving the greater university, the department offers required general education courses for all degree programs.
Department of Communication Studies Needs
The department identifies hardware and software upgrades for publication classes and support for faculty and student research as the most critical funding priorities. Additional funding of things such as a visiting professor/professional or support of students study abroad to broaden their interculutral communcations experience would also be very desirable.

Coursework in journalism, advertising and public relations areas rely on state-of-the-art software programs to produce publications. Keeping technology current is an ongoing challenge; hardware and software must be replaced every 3-4 years to stay abreast of industry standards.
Support for Faculty and Student Research...................................................... $15,000
Both faculty and students in Communcations Studies at FHSU are encouraged to engage in research projects and continue their professional development by presenting those projects at local, regional, national and international conferences and/or submitting their research for publication. Undergraduate Research Experiences (URE) for students also are a priority at FHSU. This fund will help cover the cost of variety of research-related activities for students and faculty.
Visting Professional/Professor $35,000/semester
A visting professor or industry professional would work as a faculty member for one semester to provide a difference perspective for our students. This indiviual would preferebly by someone who would enhance the diversity experiences for our students.
Study Abroad $10,000
Forward thinking, world ready, is something students can best develop through direct experiences and knowledge of other cultures. The best way to learn to meet the challenges of a changing global society is for our students to study different cultures first hand. This will allow them to better understand how different cultures communicate and postion them to play a role in developing the new, changing, global society.
