Department of ECONOMICS, FINANCE and ACCOUNTING

The Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting prepares students for careers in corporate accounting, public accounting, banking and financial services, corporate finance, financial planning, insurance, international business, industry, government and non-profit organizations.

Graduates go into the workforce with solid training and the necessary skills to be successful in their respective careers. The department has a strong tradition of sending graduates to work in western Kansas, but international students also maintain a presence in the classroom and graduates are being prepared to use their skills globally.

Matching donors’ interests with departmental funding needs will make it easier to maintain the high quality education that is expected from FHSU. This will ensure that future FHSU graduates in accounting, economics, and finance will be able to compete in the job market and represent FHSU well as they progress in their careers.

Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting Needs

Endowed Chair in Economics, Finance, or Accounting
Establishing or contributing towards an endowment to cover the salary for a faculty or chair position would allow the department to compete for well-qualified faculty. Accounting and finance faculty positions have historically been difficult to fill due to the shortage of qualified applicants. Having an endowed position to advertise would benefit the job search.

Endowed Full-Tuition Scholarships
The department would like to offer full-tuition scholarships for students. Most of our current scholarships are $1,000 or less. Tuition costs have been increasing, and the cost of books has increased significantly the past several years. Full-tuition scholarships could help attract and retain top students. For the 2011-2012 academic year, undergraduate tuition and fees are $4,082 for a resident student taking 15 credit hours of on-campus classes per semester; and book costs for an academic year can total $1,000 or more.

Support for Faculty Research
The College of Business and Leadership is in the process of seeking accreditation from The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). In order to meet research requirements set forth by AACSB, faculty need to maintain research agendas and meet publication requirements. Funding is needed for expenses for data acquisition, collection, and analysis; summer research opportunities; professional conference fees; and travel expenses related to conference attendance.

Faculty Professional Development
Maintaining intellectual capital is another accreditation requirement. Attending workshops and other training activities allows faculty to stay current in their teaching areas and develop new skills.
