Department of GEOSCIENCES

The Department of Geosciences encompasses undergraduate degree programs in geology, geography and geography/GIS and graduate programs in geology and geography. The department will also add a GPS and Surveying class.

Because of its of new technology that focuses on human and physical environments, there is a constant need for additional lab equipment and materials. Items that are crucial to the department serve the curriculum requirements of students and are especially important to meeting the teaching and research needs of a growing student body and the expanding demands of science education.

Department of Geosciences Needs

High Precision GPS Unit.......................................................................$15,000
This unit, accurate within a centimeter, is typical of equipment used by
city and government surveyors.


Large Format Printer............................................................................... $12,000
The department’s large format printer is used extensively by faculty
and students to print maps and posters for student projects. The current
machine has been in use for 12 years and has a limited life span.


Ground Penetrating Radar.................................................................... $40,000
This is a low-frequency radio radar wave that bounces off structures
under the earth and is needed for use in structural geology classes.


Field Camp Scholarships.......................................................................$10,000
Field Camp is a two week integrative geoscience capstone course involving a
broad range of applied field techniques and procedures. Camp is held in western
Colorado and Utah for the best access to a broad range of geologic formations.
Tuition and fees for this six hour course average $2,000. The department offers
$500 camp scholarships to qualified students to help defray the cost.


Field Camp Transportation support; 3 vans @ $3,500 each..............$10,500
Transportation (milage, fuel, and a driver) average $3,500 per van per
year, primarily for field camp travel. This represents 12% of the department’s
annual budget.

Small tents and backpacks for smaller groups and shorter field trips


Travel Scholarships to support student participation at industry meetings....$5,000 annually
