Department of INFORMATICS

The Department of Informatics at Fort Hays State University encompasses five undergraduate degree programs: Management Information Systems, Computer Networking and Telecommunications, Web Development, Media Studies and Information System Engineering.

Because of the ever-shifting nature of technologies in these fields, there is a constant need to upgrade, replace and enhance equipment used in labs and learning envirnments such as the department’s television studio. These items are not only crucial for the continued success of the Department of Informatics, but also serves as a means of attracting new students from around the world to this growing program.

Department of Informatics Needs

MEDIA STUDIES
High Definition ENG Cameras and Recording Decks........................... $26,575

This equipment will give students experience in the growing field of high definition
television as the industry continues to advance.
Editing Workstations Upgrades.................................................................. $19,750
Upgrades will give students access to tools used in television and post-production companies across thecountry.
Teleprompters for Television Studio......................................................... $11,250
Replacing the outdated teleprompters and teleprompting system with a new system will improve
student learning during live broadcasts.
WEB DEVELOPMENT
Computer and Software Updates................................................................ $29,300

Adobe CS4 Web Development Software is needed to keep the program in line with industry
advancements. New hardware systems are needed to handle the software update.
Cisco, Web Development and Oracle Curriculum Server....................... $8,950
New servers are needed to facilitate course delivery and testing of Cisco configurations and web
deployments. The viability of some courses will depend on this item being funded.
COMPUTER NETWORKING
Netlab Expansion........................................................................................... $75,500

New pods would allow students to meet Cisco curriculum standards by building and testing router and system configurations.
VMWare Academy......................................................................................... $15,000
Funding is needed to become a member of the VMWare Academy. This affiliation will give students the ability to test a virtual network of closed systems without disrupting other networks.
Voice Over Internet Protocol Lab Upgrade.............................................. $30,000
This will allow faculty to teach the latest technology advancements in Voice Over IP, which involves telecommunications over the internet.
MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS
MIS Lab Computer and Software Upgrades............................................ $47,500

Computers and software in the MIS computer lab are several years old. Upgrades in hardware are
needed to handle more advanced programs used in the industry.
Citrix Solutions............................................................................................. $100,000
A software/hardware system that allows students to log into a virtual system to access software
consistent to all students. It would also translate into less expensive future software upgrades.
Information System Engineering
This brand new program needs to develop scholarships to attract students to this profession,
which will be very important to the Kansas and United States economy.
