Department of LEADERSHIP STUDIES

The Department of Leadership Studies at Fort Hays State University is one of just 20 undergraduate programs in Organizational Leadership in the country. The 2010-2011 academic year marks the 10th anniversary for the undergraduate degree in leadership. Our graduates are highly sought after and find employment opportunities in the corporate, public, and non-profit sectors. In addition to the undergraduate degree, the department also offers a certificate as well as a minor in Leadership Studies.

The Department of Leadership Studies is responsible for preparing the next generation of organizational and community leaders. Through academic and co-curricular experiences, students gain practical knowledge and skills to be successful agents for positive change.

One of the cornerstones of our academic programs is the LDRS 310: Fieldwork in Leadership Studies course. The service-learning course gives students opportunities to identify a community problem, visualize potential solutions and follow through on an idea from imagination to execution. Further, students learn about themselves and develop their leadership capacities as they put into practice their skills in a real-life community change project. The leadership skills students learn in the course are transferrable to any context. Community change projects are never free. Even a modest amount of financial support, effectively put to use, can greatly enhance chances for success.

Supporting the Department of Leadership Studies will not only support current FHSU students, but also will have a lasting impact in the Hays region and beyond.

Department of Leadership Studies Needs

LDRS 310: Fieldwork in Leadership Studies.................................................... $1000 /semester
$200 sponsors one team

Service-learning is an effective teaching method by which to enhance students’
understanding and commitment to civic issues and to develop their capacities
to initiate change. LDRS 310: Fieldwork in Leadership Studies provides
students direct experiences of the leadership process by initiating change in the
community. The lack of resources is often a barrier to their success. We seek to
assist these student projects by supporting, in part, their financial needs.

Student Scholarships..............................................................................................$10,000/ yr
$1000 sponsors one student

A strong scholarship program plays an important role in the Department of
Leadership Studies ability to recruit outstanding students. These gifts can be
established through annual giving or endowed named funds.

Study Abroad..........................................................................................................$10,000
In an ever-increasing global environment, students need direct experiences
and first-hand knowledge of international perspectives and to learn to be more
effective in their role as global citizens. This resource will provide leadership
students the opportunity for short-term or long-term study abroad opportunities.

Student Research/Conference Fund.....................................................................$5,000
Students are strongly encouraged to engage in research projects or other
internship experiences as part of the degree requirements. These resources will
cover the costs associated with research and travel expenses associated with
conference presentations.

Faculty Development Fund.....................................................................................$10,000
All departmental faculty members are called to engage in research and scholarly
activities. Funds are needed to support the costs associated with conducting
research and to cover publishing expenses as well as presentation of papers at
regional, national and international symposiums.
