FORSYTH LIBRARY

The sterotypical image of a library with its hushed atmosphere and isolated individuals with a stack of books scattered about is far different from student life today.

Entering the library today evokes a sense of engagement and excitement. Libraries have taken a cue from the working world and from educational research: People learn best in group settings. Thus, Forsyth Library provides numerous “learning commons” areas where students can interact with their peers and collaborate on group assignments.

No substitute exists for a library that serves as an exceptional repository of knowledge with skilled and caring staff who share their expertise and a human touch when a student is struggling with a difficult assignment. Financial support will help Forsyth Library in its continued mission to serve students and faculty at FHSU.

The library boasts a technology assistance center, four “smart study” rooms with the latest technology, a dimensional mediated lab with multiple computer screens, an attractive open study area and a large quiet study area. As a result of these changes, the number of students using Forsyth Library has tripled over the past few years.

Forsyth Library serves distance learners, whether in the United States or abroad. It has achieved international status in its collaborations with libraries in China and Turkey.

The library also maintains relationships with the Kansas Museums Association, the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, and numerous other educational and government institutions.

Books
A library needs to renew itself continually, to keep pace with rapidly changing times. Among current needs are newly-published books in the general collection, reference collection and books for the professional development of current and future teachers.
$80,000
Online Resources
The library must also remain current in online references for students and faculty. This includes online journals, reference materials, databases and catalog upgrades.

Library Technologies
Forsyth Library is a leader in information and technology literacy. Technology enables the library staff to implement and maintain on-line catalogs and create digital collections. The Learning Commons provides a state-of-the-art instruction area where students have access to ‘smart study rooms’ for collaborative research and training in the latest presentation technology. Funding is needed to maintain the momentum that it gained by creating a technology-rich learning and research environment.
