It’s an exciting time to be involved with the Department of Management and Marketing. We are on the leading edge of the forward-thinking, world-ready campaign at FHSU, as we prepare students to tackle and conquer a continuously-changing and highly-interconnected business world. We offer majors and programs in Management, Marketing, Business Education, Corporate Communication, Training & Development, Human Resource Management, and Tourism & Hospitality Management. Minors and Certificate programs also are available in a variety of related fields including Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Business Law, Customer Service, and Operations Management.
Students actively translate classroom knowledge into experience through internships, service-learning projects, study-abroad programs, business tours, and conferences. Departmental student groups (Marketing Management Association and Collegiate DECA) participate in active learning through regional and national business competitions, business tours, and local fundraising campaigns. At the International Collegiate DECA competition, FHSU student competitors placed 3rd in Advertising Campaign in 2009; in 2010, various student teams placed in the top 15 in several different competitive events.
As Kansas adapts to new economic challenges, our department is changing, too. Increased student interests and needs in business areas such as entrepreneurship and environmental sustainability have created additional departmental needs to support both students and faculty. To support these ever-changing student needs, and to invest in unique opportunities, we ask our dedicated alumni and friends to help fund scholarships and programs. These investments will help students and future graduates gain a competitive advantage in an increasingly complex business world.
Department of Management and Marketing Needs
Merit-Based and Needs-Based Scholarships $500 - $10,000
Tuition costs in Kansas are increasing. For the 2010-2011 academic year, undergraduate tuition and fees were $3,942 for a resident student taking 15 credit hours of on-campus classes per semester; and textbook costs for an academic year can total $1,000 or more.
Student Support $500 - $10,000
The department supports a variety of opportunities to enhance students’ classroom experiences, and to help them network with organizations throughout the state, country and world. Students travel to and compete in the International Career Development Conference for Collegiate DECA. They travel to local and regional businesses, and faculty members bring local business leaders to the classroom. Students study abroad and learn about business culture and practice around the world. Students develop and manage service projects and fundraising projects to enhance their skills in marketing, management, and professional communication. All of these activities enable students to leverage and enhance their classroom knowledge in a practical sense, while leaving a positive imprint on the FHSU community.
Support for Faculty and Student Research $1000 - $100,000
The College of Business and Leadership is in the process of seeking accreditation from AACSB, which will enhance the value and employability of our students. To meet the requirements set forth by AACSB, faculty members must maintain active research agendas and meet rigorous publication requirements. Undergraduate Research Experiences (URE) for students also are a priority at FHSU. Funding is needed for a variety of research-related activities for students and faculty.
Faculty Professional Development $500 - $2000
Another important accreditation requirement for AACSB is maintaining faculty members’ intellectual currency in their respective academic areas. By attending workshops, faculty internships with regional businesses, and other training seminars and activities, faculty members will both stay current in their teaching areas as well as develop new skills.
Partially-Endowed or Fully-Endowed Faculty Chair $250,000 - $3,000,000
To support the growing needs of the Department of Management and Marketing, we need to attract and retain high-quality faculty members. Additionally, the State of Kansas “Faculty of Distinction Program” matches the earnings from minimum endowments of at least $250,000 to supplement university funding.
