It’s an exciting time to be involved with the Department of Modern Languages. On the forefront of the university’s “forward-thinking, world-ready” campaign, our department serves students by preparing them to face (and succeed in) a fast-changing and above all highly interconnected world. We offer majors and minors in Spanish and German, with additional course work in other important languages. All four of our language offerings—Spanish, German, Chinese, and French—can also be used as a significant component to the new Minor in Global Competencies, a university-wide offering that can complement any major offered at FHSU.
The Department of Modern Languages also implements the university’s global campaign by offering study abroad opportunities, with accompanying Study Abroad Certificates that are available to all students, regardless of major. We have taken a group of students to study and explore Germany through our unique exchange program with the University of Duisburg-Essen, which brought students from Germany to our campus this year. In 2011 we will offer a short-term summer program in Barcelona, Spain, as a follow up to a very successful trip this past summer to Peru. And over Spring Break, we will offer a ten-day walking tour of the Spanish pilgrimage route, Camino de Santiago.
In order to support students seeking to take advantage of these unique study-abroad opportunities, we ask our dedicated alumni to help fund travel scholarships, and in so doing, help students and future graduates gain a foothold in an increasingly globalized world.
