The Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science offers concentrations in Pre-law, Political Management, International Studies, Public Administration, and Global Public Policy. Political science core coursework provides the foundational instruction in areas across the discipline, while concentrations focus on knowledge and skills in specific areas.
The degree program is built upon a combination of theory and practice that grounds the student in political philosophy while building research skills. Students combine classroom knowledge with real-world internships and hands-on experience to get the complete picture of both the theory and practice of political science. Student engagement in events and activities outside the classroom is an important part of the program and the Department identifies funding for these activities and scholarships as the highest priority.
Department of Political Science Needs
Annual Named Scholarship Up to $10,000
Gifts up to $10,000 will be included in the Fort Hays State University pooled fund. This money is awarded by the university to students on the basis of merit and need.
Endowed Funds $10,000
Named funds, in honor or in memory of a loved one, can be endowed for $10,000 or more. Or, donors may wish to include an endowed fund in their wills and estate plans.
US Air Force Academy Assembly $600/year
Each year the Department of Political Science selects two outstanding students to attend the US Air Force Academy Assembly in Colorado Springs. This exciting conference allows our students to hear from experts in fields related to foreign policy and national security. They participate in roundtable discussions with students from across the country. Support is needed to continue to offer this outstanding conference opportunity.
Washington DC Field Trip, (student travel support) $10,000/year
Every year or so over the last decade the Department of Political Science has led students on a week-long field trip to our nation’s capitol. Increasing travel costs combined with economic pressures on students and their families has hindered the department’s ability to lead students on what is one of the most exciting and transformative field trip activities.
Study Abroad/Away Support $2,000/year
In addition to sending our majors to foreign countries as part of their educational experience, we have also supported students in study-away experiences in the U.S. in such places as Boston and California or for internships in New York City or Washington D.C. Support for these world-expanding opportunities could defray the costs of airfare or other travel expenses related to the study abroad/away experience. Or, it may help buy books, or cover partial tuition costs.
