Department of PSYCHOLOGY

The Department of Psychology at Fort Hays State University offers undergraduate and graduate programs that provide a solid foundation in the science of behavior and mental processes. At the graduate level, the department offers training in clinical, school, and general experimental psychology. At the undergraduate level, students are offered a strong curriculum in the foundation courses and in upper division courses students can explore current areas of interest in the field. Example topics include: The Criminal Mind, Psychology of the Movies, and Stress Management.

Faculty members within the department are committed to achieving excellence in teaching, scholarship and service. Additionally, the faculty has varied interests that represent several active areas of psychology. Such diversity provides the student with a variety of viewpoints.

Undergraduate students are given the opportunity to work one on one with faculty members on research endeavors. These collaborations often result in presentations at regional and national professional psychology conferences and students are encouraged to pursue publication outlets as well. The degree programs offered in the Psychology Department at FHSU provide a solid base for future employment and advanced coursework.

Department of Psychology Needs

Update Current Psychological Testing Instruments $10,000
The department offers advanced training in the areas of child and adult psychological assessment and maintains a variety of standardized testing instruments for use in training and research. Examples of the types of tests used in training and research include the Wechsler Intelligence and Achievement Scales, the Stanford-Binet, the Woodcock-Johnson Cognitive and Achievement and other tests of personality, behavior, and cognition. As many of these tests are updated every 5-10 years, the department is continually in need of resources to stay current with the latest version of testing instruments.

Student Assistantships $3000
The department strives to offer our undergraduate students with an enhanced curriculum. This involves students becoming actively engaged with scholarship endeavors. The department offers mentored research with senior faculty members that psychology departments at larger universities are unable to provide. To continue to provide our students with unique educational experiences, funding is needed to offer students assistantships to work on research and travel with faculty members to disseminate findings.

Qualified Presenters $1,500/per speaker
FHSU is honored to be the 2011 host school of the Association for Psychological and Educational Research in Kansas (PERK) Annual Conference. Industry professionals, college faculty, and graduate and undergraduate students all attend this conference to present and learn about research. Funding is needed to assist in securing high-quality speakers for the event.
