Jamil Thorne, Youngest Person in Foundation History to Establish Scholarship Fund

SUPPORT THE JAMIL THORNE DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Jamil Thorne
Jamil Thorne, a 22-year-old Colorado Springs native, has recently become the youngest person in the history of FHSU’s Foundation to personally establish a scholarship fund! The Jamil Thorne Diversity Scholarship has been created at Fort Hays State to provide financial assistance to students of color.

“Jamil's passion for FHSU and students of color is evident through his establishment of the Jamil Thorne Diversity Scholarship”, says LeAnn Brown, Instructor of Leadership Studies at Fort Hays State. “He has overcome great adversity in his personal life to achieve his dream of a college education, and his desire to give back to this university demonstrates Jamil’s character and his willingness to serve others.  He is a role model for students of color on this campus and is a blessing to our FHSU community.”

The $1000 annual scholarship will be divided among five students. The initial intention is to ease the financial burden of textbook expenses. Thorne intends to expand the scholarship over time with hopes to eventually assist students with tuition, room and board.

Jamil Thorne“I feel the time is right. I want to leave my legacy here,” Thorne says. “The cobblestone streets, the people smiling, and recognizing people on campus who know you by name – the small town feel in Hays allows you to connect with others. I love this school – it’s done a lot for me and I want to give back to it. I would like to see this scholarship grow with the years to come. My ultimate goal is to get more black students here to Fort Hays State who can have the same great experiences that I have had.”
