2nd Annual Kansas City Golf Classic Raises Funds and Unites Tiger Community

Tiger pride took over Dub’s Dread Golf Course in Kansas City when more than 65 fans showed up to swing their clubs in support of Fort Hays State University. The 2nd Annual FHSU Alumni & Friends Kansas City Golf Classic took place on Friday, September 5 and was a great success with more than $5,000 raised. These funds will benefit the Student Recognition Program (SRP) held annually in Overland Park to recruit future Tigers from the Kansas City area to Fort Hays State.

The golf tournament was a partnership between the Kansas City Area Alumni & Friends Chapter, the FHSU Alumni Association office, your FHSU Foundation, and was hosted by FHSU grads Tyler ‘13 and Jessica Thompson ‘13. Once again, this event proved to be a positive partnership and confirmed there are some exceptional, young and engaged volunteers throughout the Kansas City area. The Golf Classic was planned by a dedicated committee of 19 volunteers, and wouldn’t have been possible without them; please see a list of these important members below. The committee was able to secure CrossFirst Bank as a $500 lunch sponsor, as well as Platinum Title as a $500 prize drawing sponsor. An award ceremony took place at the end of the day and a “Twilight Membership” to Dub’s Dread Golf Course, valued at over $1,000, was given away.

As hosts of the event, the Thompsons briefly shared their story with those who were in attendance. For those who don’t know Tyler and Jessica, they made an outstanding impact at Fort Hays State University throughout their years in Hays. In January 2013, before they even graduated, they started talking about giving back. The couple had greatly benefited from scholarship support while they were students at Fort Hays State and believed it was important for them to financially support their alma mater.

Less than a year out of college, Tyler and Jessica were newlyweds who had set up a fund with the FHSU Foundation in support of student internships. “It was an investment that we were thrilled to make because we’ve been there and know how important it is to other students,” said Tyler. “With the ‘World Ready Fund’, we want to promote the direct relationship between internships, student teaching, and a great job offer. For us, they provided the experience of a lifetime!”

The Kansas City Golf Classic has proved to be successful, not only in building a sense of community among KC alumni, but also in raising funds in support of Fort Hays State and prospective students. Please mark your calendars for the 3rd Annual FHSU Alumni & Friends Kansas City Golf Classic, which will take place on Friday, August 28, 2015. Online registration for the event will be available in the summer of 2015 and will be $99/player or $396/team.

Committee members will be needed for the 2015 Kansas City Golf Classic. If you’re interested in getting more involved with fellow Tiger fans throughout Kansas City, please contact Jason Williby at jjwilliby3@fhsu.edu or (785) 656-3191.
